According to a new book by Queen Mary University of London academic Dr S M A Moin, the answer lies not in technology itself, but in the human capacity for imagination, ethical judgement and moral courage.
Published today (31 July), Leadership in the Imagination Age: Navigating Unprecedented Possibilities and Moral Challenges argues that traditional approaches to leadership are no longer sufficient for a world shaped by artificial intelligence, accelerating technological change and increasing global uncertainty.
Dr Moin, Reader (Associate Professor) in Storytelling and Brand Communications in Queen Mary's School of Business and Management, argues that while organisations have unprecedented access to information, data and automation, many of today's biggest leadership challenges cannot be solved by technology alone. Instead, leaders must be able to navigate complexity, make ethical decisions and inspire others through purpose, trust and shared vision.
At the heart of the book is the concept of the Imagination Age, an emerging era in which creativity, storytelling and artificial intelligence are reshaping business, education and society. Rather than viewing imagination as a soft skill, Dr Moin presents it as a disciplined leadership capability that enables organisations to respond to uncertainty while remaining accountable for the human consequences of their decisions.
The book draws on leadership theory, systems thinking, ethics, philosophy, storytelling and futures studies to explore how leaders can balance innovation with responsibility, organisational performance with social purpose, and technological progress with human values.
To help leaders navigate this changing landscape, Dr Moin introduces three original leadership frameworks:
- The Leadership Compass, helping leaders balance purpose, people, performance and possibility.
- The Moral Gyroscope, providing an ethical framework for decision making when technological capability advances faster than moral certainty.
- Cosmic Leadership, encouraging leaders to see themselves as stewards within a wider social and planetary context, recognising responsibilities that extend beyond organisational success.
Dr Moin said: "Artificial intelligence is changing how we work, create and make decisions, but it cannot replace the qualities that make leadership fundamentally human. As technology accelerates, our greatest challenge is not asking what machines can do, but deciding what we should do. Leadership in the Imagination Age is about helping leaders navigate unprecedented possibilities with imagination, wisdom and moral responsibility."
Professor Tony Michael, Associate Dean for Education in Queen Mary's School of Business and Management, said: "Leadership in the Imagination Age is a beautifully structured and timely contribution that stimulates learning, reflection and dialogue. It is not simply another leadership textbook; it challenges readers to reclaim imagination from spectacle, ethics from compliance and leadership from ego."
The publication builds on Dr Moin's research into storytelling, creativity, leadership and branding, exploring how narratives influence decision making and shape organisations. It offers practical insights for leaders across business, education, government and the public sector who are seeking to navigate rapid technological change without losing sight of the values that underpin responsible leadership.
As organisations continue to embrace artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, the book argues that the qualities which distinguish exceptional leaders remain deeply human: curiosity, empathy, integrity, imagination and the ability to make ethical decisions when the path ahead is uncertain.
Ultimately, Leadership in the Imagination Age asks a question that will become increasingly relevant as technology continues to evolve: When machines can optimise almost everything, what remains uniquely human about leadership?
Leadership in the Imagination Age: Navigating Unprecedented Possibilities and Moral Challenges by Dr S M A Moin is published by Routledge and is available to purchase from the Routledge website and other major book retailers.
